How much coal does it take to charge up an electric car overnight?

How long would it take to fully charge an empty car battery with the car's generator?

  • The car battery capacity is 100Ah. I do not know the capacity/amp output of the car generator so assume an average car generator for that battery size. What formula did you use to come up with the time estimate?

  • Answer:

A 'Rule of Thumb' is that lead-acid batteries 'should' be charged at a rate of 'Capacity/10'. i.e. your 1ooAh battery can safely be charged with a current of 10 amps and will take ~10 hours to fully charge. (The chemistry of 'real' batteries is quite complicated and charging methods are constantly improving. Temperature will affect things and some people think that a 'dirty' charging voltage is better than an absolutely smooth voltage. Do NOT use a 'dirty' charging voltage for more recent types of batteries.)

Car battery is charged 10-15 min after connecting the car battery charger. If it dies early after charged it means that battery is dad. Other wise if battery is charged outside the car by using battery charger it takes 10-12 hours to completely charged. Car battery plates will be coated with sulphate than it is discharged and not working for long period. If battery plated coated with Lead-acid than batteries are happiest and kept battery fully charged at all times. Never left car battery become discharged for long time.
