What are good second jobs for electrical engineers?

What jobs sites do quality US-based PHP/MySQL software engineers most frequent while seeking full-time jobs?

  • Over the years we've posted jobs everywhere from Craigslist to Mashable Jobs to LinkedIn, with varied degrees of success in finding candidates that are both qualified as well as US-based and available full-time, but overall results have been frustrating. Our policy is not to work with recruiters because I'd rather pay those fees to the candidate.

  • Answer:

As Oliver said, high caliber engineers usually don't look for new work, and when they do it's usually for a short time as they get snapped up pretty quickly (or just referred to another company by a friend, so you have no chance at all). Sad to say that the techniques that recruiters employ (scouring LinkedIn profiles, cold calls and messaging, etc.) are probably your best shot, and if you're adamant on sticking with your "no recruiters" policy it just means you'll be the one making the calls. I'll note that most companies I know consider recruiting a necessary business cost, but certainly not at the expense of the hire's comp.

If you are looking here on East coast then you should post your job to http://www.socialmatchbox.com.  I am pretty sure there is someone in your community doing the same.  Job boards seem to be growing on trees these days.  Don't waste your money on high priced job ads.  Additionally, you may want to re-think your revenue spend based on your circumstances.  Not all recruiters operate the same way.  Some charge fees based on compensation, some will work hourly, others work on a retainer.  Additionally, you should be thinking about recruiters as people who can introduce you to people you would not have found on your own - ever.  If you are talking to recruiters, or basing your experience on ones you have dealt with in the past, and they are serving up the same people you would get if you posted an ad or paid for a job board resume database account then they are not the right ones to be talking to.  Last, but not least, don't just think about job boards as the delivery vehicle.  You can buy targeted ads for cheap you know.

You seem to be using the classic "post" and "pray" model.  As a recruiter I can tell you it's highly unlikely you will find qualified candidates especially the passive kind lining up to apply for your jobs.  My 2 cents: Motivate your internal team of developers with bounties/bonus for quality referrals. Go niche (research specific online portals that cater to your target audience). Monetize user groups like sponsoring a local PHP user group dinner and ask your CTO to do a presentation if one is on board. Last but not least, use quality sourcers instead of full lifecycle recruiters if you are adamant on paying boatloads of fees, etc.

Very few, if any...we rarely post jobs to anything other than our own careers site, great engineers are rarely 'looking', you have to go find them.

Local developers in US would ask for high price. Try to hire people from abroad. Eastern Europe would be nice place to search in. Developers from Eastern Europe are dreaming to leave their countries forever together with famelies. All they need is just a full-time position with good social package. Moreover they do not have probles with Visa like Russians or Chinese.

Hi David, yes we try to meet candidates through more social channels like local meetups and technology events, but finding folks looking for full-time gigs has proven difficult (i.e., most developers are looking for more short-term opportunities so they can pick and choose projects).

I agree with Allen - If you are a talented developer, you are probably working and find your jobs through networking and not through websites.  If you have a strong set of local events in technology, that might be another option for you to consider.
