I would add to the list above, low tech navigation and tracking skills. Using a compass, navigating by the stars, making a map, and finding your way from pt A to pt B without a road or GPS. These are great skills to have in general, particularly if you ever take up scuba.

Thanks for the A2A, Joseph. It's a very good question. Here are a few things off the top off my head: Proper, good, reliable ways to make a fire Ways of maintaining hygiene Trapping methods (forget hunting, most city dwellers can't) A guide to edible/non-edible plants Water location and water purification Health and Injury related tips and tricks Crafting of basic tools, stuff you should have with you

All the basics--how to find food, what's safe to eat, how to find clean water, how to build a shelter, how to stay warm, how to fend off predators, how to alert searchers on the ground and in the air, how to find civilization again.

I would want training in: First aid as well as preventative health care Building fires in wet and dry conditions Building seaworthy watercraft Orienteering Cooking Which natural foods to seek, and avoid, such as poisonous berries and leaves Creating twine and rope, and tying a variety of knots for different use cases (the bowline is a good standby for many cases but there are many more) Building weatherproof dwellings, both at ground level and in trees Building spring-loaded animal traps I highly recommend a survival book called "How to keep warm with an axe." It will give you many more ideas.

Definitely food safety and how to make and find food. How to be resourceful. And how to treat yourself medically.
Deborah Rosser
How to find safe water. How to build a shelter. Making fire.
