How is mechanical energy measured?

How does nuclear energy compare to alternatives when measured by death per TWH, when weighting each death by expected reduction in future GDP contribution?

  • It is well known that nuclear energy ranks #1 when measured simply by deaths (see for example ). However, such studies appear to equate the accidental death of a 28-year-old nuclear factory worker with the death of a 74-year-old that dies two years earlier than expected due to lung cancer due to coal pollution. In my opinion, the death of the 28-year-old is more costly because of his greater potential future economic contribution. How does the comparison fair if you weight each death by the person's expected reduction in future GDP contribution?

  • Answer:

The comparison probably still favours nuclear power. The amount of air-pollution caused by coal and fossil fuels is such that they kill vastly more people than nuclear power ever has.
