Does Google penalize you for duplicate content?

Is having a blog that shares content with different websites considered "duplicate content" by Google?

  • We've just found that our freelance blogger is selling the same blog articles (just with different names/location) to other websites. Is this considered duplicate content? Will this hurt my rankings in the future?

  • Answer:

This could be viewed as plagiarism yes however I wouldn't worry about it too much just yet as long as a stop is put to it.

Chances are that it will hurt your rankings and those of the other sites. Duplicate content is not a good thing.

A. Yes this is duplicate content. B. Your rankings could potentially be hurt. There have been cases where Google has not been able to determine the original source. Bonus: - Your recourse includes requesting your intellectual copyright be removed (I hope you have a legal agreement with the freelancer that you own the work he submits to you) - Submitting these duplicates to Google's report scraper tool.
