  • Facts: 90% of kazaks use vkontakte(russian fb) already everybody uses twitter, linkedin, youtube, google Is it feasible to make local versions of fb, youtube, google, twitter etc, in small markets/countries with small "depth". General question: small local markets are doomed to be part of big corporations? But! • Answer:

In short, I think it depends on several factors: Type of product you want to launch - does it depends on social graph or content of UGC? External factors - what is the current market situation. Available resources. Now, lets see everything in more details:     Putting Youtube, Facebook and LinkedIn in one list might be wrong approach. While the former depends on the content, the later two depend on social graph.     In case of Youtube, you already can evidence that local video hosting products are doing well at least during last 5-6 years. To some extend it became popular due to external factors, such as Internet speed. With improving situation in Internet providers' market demand on locally stored heavy content is slowing down. Of course, one will also need to take into account the founders' effort to promote their product.     Now, in case of social networks a lot depends on social graph structure within the country. If the social graph of the majority of users is bounded by country's border, you will have a decent chance to take off and prosper. This is the case with China and Russia. While having a large amount of users, these countries also face the situation where social graph is not borders-crossing. In most of the time people tend to have their connections inside the country. If you will look to the people who have many connections abroad, they mostly use Facebook. This is the case with many European or Latin American countries.     However, if have you have huge amount of resources and ambition, you can start from Kazakhstan and expand to the countries that are more important in terms of social graph. There are good examples of team who chose this path. To conclude, if you have favorable conditions, right vision for the product requirements for local market and decent recourses - it's definitely feasible to make a local products. Please note, that I left the revenue part outside of the scope of this answer.
