How can I get an overseas job as a civil engineer?

How can an international college graduate get a job as a software engineer?

  • I am graduating from a non-US university as an international student (and I am also a non-US citizen). I applied to hundreds of places around the world (including my home country) but did not get positive results. The only on site interview that I had was with Google. Unfortunately that ended with a rejection.   A little about my background, I have a high GPA and expecting to graduate with 3.8/4.0. I have two internship (one being a top 3 software company in the world, and yes I applied for that company too, more than one country, did not get any positive result) and one traineeship. All of these positions were in software engineering/research. On top of these, I made iOS and Android apps, several personal projects (and some hosted on github), good result in one of the coding contests. So it's not like I don't have any experience. I have seen people from the US complaining that after having interviews with Facebook/MS/Google/add few more companies here/etc. and telling that they've got rejected. My situation is a bit different because Google is the only company that is actively doing Engineering in this country. Furthermore, I don't have any chance to work at a start-up, the ones that I've had interviewed (mostly SF based) were interested to hire but due to H1B visa being too much of an issue they kindly lost their interest to hire me, or they just say we're looking for an American citizen only or experienced Engineer to sponsor for an H1B visa. I cannot start my own start-up due to visa and lack of VC and investment issues. So I cannot start my Spotify or WhatsApp. I cannot just return back to my country and try applying because there are so many universities and so many graduates, so they always prefer hiring grads from top nationwide and US unis. Oh by the way, don't suggest me applying Masters, because I did and got rejections for the ones that I've applied for. The reason for the rejection is always "this year was too competitive". So do I really have any options apart from going back to my home country and basically do nothing? Further information: The country that I am in is Australia (so the on-site interview that I had was in Australia too), and I am from a small country that cannot be compared to any of the large countries where there are plenty of SE jobs (such as China, India). The reason why it's impossible for me to start my start-up in Australia is, firstly it's visa, now ACS(Australian Computer Society) doesn't assess graduates for residency without having 1 year paid experience from the relevant field. The other reason is amount of VCs and raising money is so hard, there are only few start-ups that managed to get few thousands of dollars. All other start-ups can only raise about $20-30k and renting a small room (as an office) itself costs about $2k/m.

Every Accomplishment starts with the decision to try My dear friend, where are you located? I gather that you're neither in US nor you're a citizen and certainly you're not in your home country(assuming its India). Where was your Google interview at? Let me tell you, my friend, you do have an impressive profile. Sorry to hear about your rejections. Pardon me, but I think a little introspection is what you need here. Do you recognize any pattern in your rejections? Is something wrong with your resume? You could be the next Jan Koum, but if you're looking for a job, you HAVE to have a good story to tell. Your resume is that story. If you're using job portals, having most relevant keywords gets you noticed. Make sure you have your Github linked. Show off your android/iOS apps if you could. Tell what technologies you worked on at your internship. Most recruiters love it when the candidate has done something on his own. I am really curious to find out whats really happening with you in this case. Please share more if you can. There are tons of jobs everywhere, man! Are you looking at the right places? Did you check out : https://careers.stackoverflow.com/ Glassdoor - http://www.glassdoor.com/Jobs/jobs.htm Github - https://jobs.github.com/ https://news.ycombinator.com/jobs http://Angel.cohttps://angel.co/jobs http://www.ventureloop.com/ventureloop/job_search.php?g=1&dc=all&ldata=San+Francisco%2C+CA%2C+US&jt=1&jc=1&jd=1&d=5&btn=1 http://www.startuphire.com/ Also, check your favorite companies. What is that you need to know to get a job you want. Keep looking. Don't settle. You said, a lot of companies didn't hire you because of H1B. That is there. But I also, would like to tell you that MANY startups in the US alone are very receptive of international graduates and could sponsor for your H1B eventually. A huge majority of my friends are working for these companies. Can you name the companies that rejected you because of H1B? Did you look for a HR consultant? They have better idea and connections to get you through. Might cost you something, but you should get through. Besides, you won't have to pay anything until your first paycheck. Why can't you startup? What does your Visa have to do with your startup? You fear you can't have VC funding you? Or you can't have an office because you're on Visa? What sort of country are you in? You should just start working on it and then tackle problems which come your way. I believe there is a workaround to all of that. :) Just being a little positive. You fear if you return to your home country, you won't find a job? Just apply. If you're in India, my friend, there are jobs that go vacant every year + IT graduates are far more blessed with jobs. And the notion that 'they' only hire graduates from top universities, is not true. There are far more jobs than there are all students in top universities in a single year. Opportunities are everywhere. How bad do you want it? Do you want it as bad as you want to breathe? Hope this clears your head. Just trying to help. my 2 cents
