What are the top journals for professors at a business school to publish in?

Commentary about ranking of journals, perceptions, would be appreciated.

Answer:
It depends on which research area you are working. For instance, the following journals have been recognised as top (A) journals for strategy: Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ) Academy of Managment Journal (AOM) Academy of Management Review (AMR) Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) Management Science Journal (MS) These two lists from FT and Times Higher Education also are relevant:http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/3405a512-5cbb-11e1-8f1f-00144feabdc0.html#axzz43vJ8SMfnhttps://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/abs-ranking-reveals-world-elite-of-business-journals/2018722.article

What really matters is what the school you are at requires for tenure. Note that while journal rankings exist, these are really just loose guidelines at the top schools, which are often referred to as "reading schools" - where they read the work and judge its merits/impact (and references are asked to do the same), rather than being "counting schools" - where it is more about meeting the count requirements. Reading schools do tenure some people with a few high impact articles, but mostly the reading is used to deny tenure to people despite tons of A publications (people who "salami slice" or "have figured out the formula" but aren't really making a difference). It's my understanding that the best public schools may be a bit more constrained towards counting (based on whatever public sector rules apply), but it may not be a guarantee. The next part is why I'm anonymous. I'm not sure how confidential this actually is, but it comes from "the Google Doc" for management - where interviews/offers/negotiated acceptances are confidentially/anonymously posted by people on the market. This covers Micro (OB, etc.) and Macro (Strategy, etc.). This is from an anonymous survey of how journals are ranked for tenure requirements:Clear A (most or all A in survey - a few schools may discount, but it could depend on focus of the department) Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) Academy of Managment Review (AMR) Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP) Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ) Organization Science (Org Sci) Management Science (MS) OBHDP (Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes - but everyone I know just calls it OBHDP) PSPB (Personality and Social Psychology - I had to look that one up - maybe my school is the one that rates it a B, though I am on the Macro side of a management department) Journal of Experimental Social Psychology (JESP) JPSP (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology - but everyone I know calls it JPSP) Management Information Systems Quarterly (MISQ - barely shows up on the survey, but only as an A, and it's my understanding that it's an A in other departments) Edit: Strategy Science not in the survey (it's brand new), but I know it's very well respected in my department. That will probably tell you where I'm at. Probably wait and see for most schools, but so far it's [nearly?] all big name faculty publishing anyway, and the editorial board is great. Thin issues are preferred over issues with lower quality work. It has great turnaround times with constructive editors. You should really submit your work here. Now you can really probably figure out where I'm at. About half A/B (abbreviation first from here on, because I'm mostly guessing at the actual names - these journals wouldn't help you at most top schools, if any, but if the article is high enough impact or good enough it could still help at reading schools). Publications here and below will mostly be ignored if you're going up for tenure at a top school (provided you have lots of good work - may still hurt slightly), but will probably hurt you if you have too many and are applying for a job at a top school, unless you're applying out of your PhD and it was done to signal fit in a smaller niche (entrepreneurship, international business). Outside the top, obviously they can be very helpful (given about half the responses rate them an A or A-). JoM (Journal of Management) PPsych (Personal Psychology) JIBS (Journal of International Business Studies) Research Policy (with a few Cs) OrgSt (?) SO (Strategic Organization I think) Worse JOB (Journal of Organizational Behavior) JBV (Journal of Business Venturing) LQ (?) JMS (?) JBE (?) BEQ (?) HR (? Probably human resources?) SEJ (Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal - though some heavy hitters publish here too - it probably depends on the quality of the article and its impact, especially at reading schools, though the average isn't great) ET&P (Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice - not actually on the survey)
