Can I get job in Finland?

How can I get a job in Finland?

  • I am obsessed about Finland and wish to move there and stay there for a long time. I am a qualified engineer from a promising South East Asian country with an experience of around 5 years in Data Science. I have applied to some Finnish Universities for MS programs and was selected by some of them. Now, it doesn't seem to be feasible enough to pursue a 2 year program without working as there are fund issues at my end. I am not sure how to pursue my dream to live and work in Finland. I have made some contacts with Finnish professionals who are into same trade as me, but I am not sure how to approach for a job.

Asked to answer.I think that the most important thing economically is to start your studies before August 2017: "Tuition fees will be introduced for non-EU/EEA students in Finland from August 2017 onwards." http://www.studyinfinland.fi/tuition_and_scholarships/tuition_fees/tuition_fees_2017 The Helsinki University will charge 10 000 - 25 000 euros per year. http://yle.fi/uutiset/universities_follow_suit_tampere_cheaper_for_foreign_students_than_helsinki_in_2017/8645143 I can't really advice you, how to get a job, my own profession is mostly based on freelancing, no permanent jobs available. That's why I don't really know, how to get a job, I only know how to get clients in my own narrow professional field, photography. It would be happy, if you could get a job of your own profession. But if your main target is to be able to live in Finland, you have the rest of your life to build your career. Can you think that you could fund your studies working in any job available? What I've read, it's probably necessary to know Finnish, more than the very basics, to get any job, but I wish that some Finn wiser than me will answer this question.

First of all, I would say that searching for a job will take you at least a year when you are in new country. So at least, go when you have affordable fund for one year at minimum. Few ways to ensure your job path in Finland: - Contact your school career counsel, seek for advices. - Start early the job market search, you have really good experiences in Data Science, and there are plenty growthed-startup (verto analytics, walkbase, topdatascience,... find them in http://articstartup.com) in this field in Finland. Doing research about them, contact them to elicit the relationship. - And search for other options too, work for university, for big corporations ( they have specific time for application). -Apply to them as soon as you get to Finland, so at least you make their name known to them. -Study Finnish seriously! At least you get to some level of speaking Finnish will put you at higher chance of employment. Language is really an issue, even you are data scientist, it is still bothering a lot to live there and can't penetrate into the society. Finally, you must take the risk.

Check out some tips on http://www.webnocs.fi/find-a-job/quick-tips-on-getting-a-job-in-finland/ including an example of CV in English and Finnish. It also depends which languages you speak. Some companies are especially looking for people who speak certain Asian languages. And no, you don't have to speak Finnish to get a job.  I met some people who work in different companies and speak only English. Just try to have a good CV and contact the companies you would like to work at. Try to be active too.
