How many people will choose not to own cars as taxi services using self-driving cars become increasingly available?
-
What will the future look like? Will Uber and Lyft benefit? Will self-driving cars make taxi services so much cheaper that people will choose them instead of cars?
-
Answer:
Well, right now owning a car outright is the most expensive option for most people who have them compared to taxis, transit, walking, etc. Yet people own their own cars in droves. You have to stop thinking of cars as a transportation utility and think of them the way that other people do: Status Freedom A giant purse or backpack Privacy Asset Decoration Collectible I don't own a car. I may never own one again. But that's because I live in places where I can walk, Solowheel, carshares, subway, taxi, bikeshare, etc. Self-driving cars just add a wrinkle to taxis and carshares for me, and many, many other people. The bigger move away from cars is urban densification. Young people are opting out of car ownership and even driver's licences in droves because of all of the transportation options I outlined. Driverless cars will barely register.

Presumably all will because costs are expected to be about a quarter the price per mile for self driving cars.

There will be less car ownership than now. You will be able to call-up a car from your cell phone and have the closest one drive to your location. This would be better than Uber or Lyft. More like car-to-go. You get privacy and a lower cost. Also, with a service, electrics would be more prevalent. Lower maintenance costs and they could automatically return to a charging station when needed. Prediction: Uber, Lyft, Taxis, rental cars all go away. Replaced by service providers. Everyone will have a car service provider (or two) like they have cell phone service now. As for ownership, It's always nice to have your own vehicle in your garage. You can keep your stuff in it and you can pimp it out any way you like. There is a degree of comfort to that. An owned vehicle would still be able to drop you off in front of a venue, park itself, and pick you up. A service would offer a variety of vehicles like zip car. If the service was a nation-wide one, you could drive a car across many states. The car would return itself to wherever the service provider wanted it.
