How do I use the blue lotus?

Is Lotus Notes still in use today? Or has its use been declining in recent years?

  • Wondering if there is a future to pick up expertise in Lotus Notes.

  • Answer:

If you look at the statistics Lotus Notes as a mail application(https://www.campaignmonitor.com/resources/will-it-work/email-clients/) the results pretty much explain its lack of popularity. But Lotus Notes is not just a mail program. Its a powerful database for which Views can be created based on templates. Through platforms such as XPages we can build robust web applications. I have had personal experience developing simple Lotus Notes apps using XPages and the range of options available for things ranging from data validation to data retrieval from Notes Views are amazing. Lotus Notes is also a great tool for team collaboration with features such as Calendar, To Do, Traveler for mobile. It's a complete package. On the flip side, the GUI is pretty buggy and I am sure this will be a never ending discussion in many forums. So I don't want to reiterate the same here. As far as I know, yes buddy its usage trend is continuing to decline.

Sounds like the usual Micro$oft Marketing Department question/propaganda. But to answer it - Yes of course it is in use today, and many of us make a good living out of programming and/or administering it. If you think it is something you would like to get into programming, and it is a very rewarding and fast development platform, then you should research your target market, whether that be your local city or wherever you would like to work. If the area has a Lotus Notes - oops sorry IBM silly-named product - User Group, then they would be the best option to find out how your local market is.

Not sure what your current experience is but if you know Java/JavaScript, DOJO, jQuery, Bootstrap, and some other web 2.0 technlologies including mobile, you can make a really good living building XPages. While most companies have transitioned away from client applications, they will never really go away but knowing how to develop web 2.0 applications will allow you to earn a fairly good income.

Generally I'd support the other answers. But what seems more interesting  to me is that the Campaign Monitor link clearly show that all PC mail  client use is declining. In  recent years Microsoft was been fighting tooth and nail to maintain the  importance of the mail client, while IBM has been a strong supporter of  browser access and mobile clients for iOS and Android (as well as  BlackBerry). When considering the linked figures you also need to  remember that Office users effectively get Outlook for free and so can  use it as a client against various mail systems - while IBM Notes only  really exists as an enterprise mail client (typically for medium and  large enterprises) and how much of Campaign Monitor's mail traffic makes  it through corporate mail filters to enterprise desktops (compares to  consumer of small enterprise users)? But  I think the real question is: does the desktop client matter any more?  IBM recently announced the next generation of its mail offering, IBM  Verse (IBM Verse), which uses the back end systems as IBM Notes but  offers only Mobile and Browser access - because those are the ways that  users are consuming their mail today. I wonder if there the will be  anyone left using a desktop mail client (Outlook or Notes) in 5 years  time?
