Is it a long process to change your first name?

Is the process for getting a middle name change the same as the process for getting a first or last name change?

  • I'm considering this as an alternative possibility for the sake of Google-ability. Apparently, people like Jae Won Joh and Kah Seng Tay don't lose out much on Google-ability.

  • Answer:

In the US (the only system I have experience with), the process of seeking a legal name change is identical in all cases EXCEPT if you've just gotten married. A recent marriage certificate is a quick route to a surname change with a lot less fuss than is necessary if you're changing anything else, at any other time. But you can certainly change just one part of your name and not the whole; I know someone who just changed the order of two vowels in her first name because she was sick of people saying it was misspelled.

Under U.S. law, yes, it's the same process and level of effort to change one's name either in in part or in whole. And there will be times when your full legal name - including the middle - will need to be spelled out on documentation such as in civil court or when buying a house. There are also cases where everybody's favorite pseudo-cops - the TSA will stop you from getting on a flight because your name as spelled on your identification doesn't equal what's on your boarding pass, e.g. - Your ID says "Christopher" but your boarding pass says "Chris". They would definitely hold you up on a middle name for this, so make sure that whatever you change your middle name to is consistent across your legal identification paperwork (Driver's License, Social Security Card, etc).
