What is an example of an advertisement that uses an emotional appeal?

What is an example of popular culture (TV show, movie, song, advertisement, a scene in a novel, etc.) that uses dialect or language differences to convey information about characters to its audience?

  • This can be like using an accent associated with a stereotype, for example, using a southern accent to show that a character is not too bright. (This is of course a stereotype, not my personal opinion)

  • Answer:

The author of http://www.amazon.com/The-13th-Valley-John-Vecchio/dp/0312200811, John DelVecchio, uses dialect to convey many aspects of his characters: Education:  The characters with higher levels of education tend to speak more formally.  Those with less tend to use more contractions, slang and swear more.  One of the medic's, (unsurprisingly nicknamed) Doc, will switch between an inner city New York dialect to formal English when he is discussing medical issues with his company-mates. Background:  Much of the dialog is written phonetically to convey accents.  A soldier from the south may have a line such as "If Ah side of hangin' side beef...they'd a treat me bettah" Mental state:  One of the main characters enters the war as a fairly educated kid from a large Italian family.  His speech starts out mostly grammatically correct and formal.  As he gets more exposure to the brutalities of combat, he starts losing his grip on sanity and his speech patterns change.  He uses more contractions, more slang and by the end a large portion of his dialogue is cussing.  Other characters speech change back and forth depending on their mental states.

I'm really, really surprised no one mentioned The Biggie: In this series, the accent and dialect of the main characters is a main "perk" to watching this program.  The accent and the slang words used in the series are loved by many viewers-- including this one :) The stereotyped NY/NJ "mafia accent" as portrayed by Hollywood films like "The Godfather", "Goodfellas", etc. is so familiar to Americans that the accent, clichés and the actors associated with it have been parodied in many ways for many years. http://www.supercartoons.net/cartoon/674/bugs-bunny-bugs-and-thugs.html The language differences in the Sopranos allow the writers to make sometimes subtle but narratively interesting contrasts between the mafia characters and the non-mafia characters.  They also point to the generational change that is a main source of conflict within the Soprano family proper and in the mafia community overall.  The kids in the series are pointedly shown not to have inherited this speech, which is just one aspect of the cultural and spiritual dead-end these characters find themselves in.  The Sopranos are raising children that even in their speech are of a different world entirely.  The children are like foreigners to the subculture the mafia adults say they are committed to continue and protect. I know this series is popular in other countries, but if you're not able to understand the speech I think you're missing out on quite a lot.  If you get that Tony Soprano is an intelligent man--easily as intelligent as his therapist, Dr. Melfi-- you hear the contrast between the two of them in scenes like this one.  Phonetics just reinforces how great their differences are-- two descendants of the same immigrant wave who are as foreign to one another as if they were from opposing cultures.
