How do I find customers?

How do freelancing graphic designers find customers?

  • Let's face it, I'm an extreme introvert. I'm pretty skilled at Graphic Designing ( I know that because almost all of my past clients have said that to me) and have a 7+ years of doing this for random people. However, I don't find people. Very rarely I find customers and I make stuff for them. I know that there is a huge potential and if I find at least 2 or 3 consistent customers I can live a happy life. If I find good people, I can even do great quality designs for them for a much lower price than what the agencies offer because I don't have many expenditures. But, still can't seem to find them. So, I thought I'd ask Quora.

  • Answer:

Give a try to websites like elance.com, odesk.com, peopleperhour.com. You can choose customers with whom you want to work. You will surely find a lot of graphic designing jobs there.

This is a super timely question, because it's a great time for freelance graphic designers right now. There really are more avenues for designers to find clients than ever. That's true even for introverts! One always reliable way to get good clients is through references, so if you have a couple past customers whom you'd feel comfortable asking to pass your name along to other potential clients, that's a great start. If that's not the case, then there are a couple other very good options. As mentioned in other answers, freelance sites like https://www.upwork.com/can be pretty good. You simply post your skills and your rate and let the potential clients come to you. The issue with a site like this, however, is that there's no real quality assurance feature on the site, so oftentimes the truly skilled designers can get pushed out by lower quality designers offering their services at a cut rate. Upwork is also usually viewed as a site for quick-fix projects or one-off things, so it may not be great for the long-term goal you seek.My personal recommendation for your needs is http://www.toptal.com/designers?x=q, the elite network of global freelancers. They have a http://www.michaelhoughton.com/article/toptal-review-the-interview-process?x=q, but once you do get into the network, their services line up with exactly what you're looking for. They have a matching team who pairs you with clients, so the introvert in you doesn't need to worry, and their clients are often more serious businesses looking to get long-term projects done. In some cases, Toptal designers have even gone on to work full-time for clients! Hope that helps, and good luck with the search!

Thanks to the Internet, freelancers can now easily find clients. Whether you are an introvert or a people person, everyone has a chance, as you don’t need to go and find the customer, instead the customer finds you. A soon-to-be-launched platform called http://yeditto.com aims to facilitate this connection. This platform looks to house freelance designers, writers, and printers together to offer customizable greeting card solutions. The designers are going to be a primary pillar of the equation—customer would come in, select you, and award the project. You deliver the work and get paid.

One of the most interesting platform for designers that should definitely be tried is http://www.designs.net. I’m a big fan of it cause I’m the one who is responsible for all my works and can set the price for all designs and creative services. Thus, can be rewarded with a big fat commission for every sale made. In addition, I have already built a pretty good portfolio and expand my audience around the world.

There are many designer portfolio websites such as http://carbonnade.com or http://behance.net where designers can create their portfolios which clients can see. There are also design marketplaces such as http://designhill.com, which on one hand have design contests where designers can participate and on the other hand they not only allow designers to create portfolios but also allow clients to approach them for one to one design contests. An added advantage is that the client and the designer can work real time on the platform giving feedback back and forth while also ensuring copyrights and timely payments both of which are taken care of by the website.
