What effect is used in this video?

What is the most used animation or effect in video games?

  • To be more specific, for this question animation / effect is stuff like: muzzle flashes, transitions, screen shaking. Hope that narrows it down. I'm just curious which were / are used the most.

    I'm not a games designer, but I have played alot of games over the years and I think that 'Lens Flare' would have to take the title as being the most used visual effect in video games.  Lens flare is added to reproduce the visual artefacts caused by bright light sources passing through a lens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_flare); this gives the game a more cinematic appearance... however High Dynamic Range (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDR_lighting) lighting is fast becoming the norm for lighting effects and it reproduces more accurately what the eye sees with the aim of reducing the cinematic appearance and giving a feeling of you actually being there. I would say screen flashing - where a major part of your screen flashes or suddenly changes in color to indicate an event.
