What are rhetorical devices?

What are some of the rhetorical devices Chuck Klosterman uses in his hypothetical questions?

  • Chuck Klosterman is known as a master of the hypothetical. He's written many articles and essays focused on hypothetical questions and often uses them as jumping-off points for exploring popular culture. I was listening to him on Bill Simmons' podcast casually rip into a hypothetical that started "Let's say I could inject you with a drug that would make you an expert in..." I was impressed, but on reflection I realized that by now this is a natural way for him to engage topics. Being such an expert in framing hypothetical questions, I presume Chuck Klosterman by now has this huge bag of tricks, of rhetorical devices he has once or often employed to create compelling hypothetical questions. What are they?

  • Answer:

I'm not an adroit enough student of philosphy to be able to identify any "devices" in the rhetoric Klosterman uses. I've read a few of his books, and don't find anything particularly "masterful" about him. He's entertaining, and obviously intelligent, but also, like many authors, somewhat overrated. He simply likes to use hyperbolic hypotheticals to get his point across.
