What is the good source for graphic designers to get the inspiration?

I need to get all of the InDesign CS6 source files from my designer, so that I can change designers if desired in future. What InDesign source file extensions should I expect to recieve?

  • Answer:

The main InDesign files will have .indd extensions. BUT depending on the nature of the work, there may be images or graphics in any of a dizzying array of potential formats, which are linked from the InDesign file. (.eps, .ai, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd, .pdf...). If you provided these files to them, you may have them already, but the designer might have modified them for the particular document or project. If the designer licensed any graphics or images from third parties (for example, stock photos), they may not be able to provide those files to you without copyright infringement. Fonts are a similar and more likely problem. Most designers doing commercial work are using commercial fonts. If so, again, they can't just give them to you without you being licensed for them, else both of you are involved in copyright infringement. Maybe the fonts they used are bundled with Creative Suite or Mac OS, but maybe not. Just some of the many reasons why changing designers can be a painful process, IĆ¢€™m afraid. Added: What Jeffrey said too! An excellent point. If your contract with the designer does not cover this, then you may not have any right to the files.

Other answers

Be aware that what you're wanting to do might be considered unethical, unless there was a written agreement that gives you the rights to the files. Without a written agreement, the copyright to those files belongs to the designer, not to you. If you go to a restaurant and buy a meal, would you ask the chef to hand over his recipes so you could take them to another restaurant?
