How to go abroad for higher studies?

Why do students from Orissa not go for higher studies (abroad or even in India), but rather settle down for a job after their undergraduate degree?

  • There are many Odiyas doing higher studies, but less compared to other states in India.

  • Answer:

First of all, I don't think your generalisation of Odia students is right. Still, I would mention few points from the perspective of a job-hungry undergraduate who can be found anywhere on the planet. 1. To Earn Money Lets face it, when it comes to life, money is second only to oxygen for survival. Thus, fresh graduates have this 'obsession with wealth' which is their primary motivation for doing anything. 2. Consumerism Since the past century, 'Humans' have evolved to become 'Consumers'. Corporations and Government want us to spend more and we oblige. No wonder, fresh graduates want to buy stuffs (smartphone, bike, shoes, watches, apparels) and eat/drink at expensive joints. 3. Education is misleading Most parents want their children to get profesional degrees (Engineering, Medical, Law, etc) for many logical reasons. The children after completing graduation realises their actual interest lie in some other domain but now they can't pursue that academically. And they have to make the best of what they have. Thus, they work as a slave, devoid of any interest just to get something out of their pricey degree. 4. Work-Ex counts In case of engineering undergraduates, who are produced in millions annually in India, very few remain interested in pursuing post-graduation in engineering. Instead, 'wealth obsession' and 'good opportunities' lead them towards MBA. The institutes (both Indian and global) offering MBA degrees/diplomas sought applicants with corporate exposure and many Indians (including Odias) work for this reason. 5. Research? Why? Finally but most importantly, Indian people don't value academic research much. Maybe because, we don't have many noble lauretes and how many Indians know about the likes of Amartya Sen, M.S. Swaminathan, Jagdish Bhagwati, Ashoke Sen, etc? Moreover, Research requires hardwork, dedication and sincerity. Many pakhal-bhaat eating Odias don't prefer it as a viable career option just because of sheer laziness and thus, lead a comfortable, laid-back lifestyle.

firstly your assumption is part true part false. Why people in odisha/ orissa don't pursue higher education ? An agrarian state most people rely on agriculture. Ranked among the most neglected state in india. No good university, school or college or below average education facilites. Castism Only one city in the entire state, which falls in the tier 2 city compared to mumbai or other cities. Virtually no good industries or IT sector based company exist Orthodox mentality of most people Pressure from family and society Well contrary to popular belief most people try to get educated but only few succeed. and people who don't try to get the jobs are soon as possible and move on with live. those who succeed move to Mumbai in search of better education and life. odisha people residing in mumbai or other city dont face much problem but certain do face the following issue. Parental and relative pressure to get married even before you can finish you under graduation. and ofcourse arranged marriage, love marriage are absolute NO NO. if you have a love marriage you family is outcast ed from the community. ( which is worth nothing i mean the community values building more temples than school) even caste based marriage are considered as sin. i have seen love marriage being more successful than arrange marriage because atleast the mentality of the couple matches where as in an arrange marriage there exist a generation gap in the couple. so people who face all of the above problems usually give up to the society and family pressure and move on with life. Those who dont? they have good marriage, good education, mostly live in mumbai or other city. and few move out to abroad. what can be done to change the situation? one of the rich state in india mineral and resources wise easy availability of cheap labor cost change of government p.s ignore grammatical error
