How to totally consume bandwidth?

How much bandwidth will an average iAd consume?

  • Eric Spiegleman http://bit.ly/apVvTA guesses 5MB per ad, based on this clip http://bit.ly/cDStwy. Does that seem reasonable?

  • Answer:

Let's keep in mind that the concept of iAd is a small, lightweight and sparsely animated banner that triggers a microsite when tapped[1]. The banner will probably not consume more than a few hundred kilobytes. The site[2] will be heavier in exchange for an immersive and fun experience, unlike traditional ads. It'll be hard to do an average in advance of actual usage.  The bandwidth will depend on how rich the average iAd will be.  Only time will tell how much "richness" the average iPhone user will endure.

I've since asked around and it appears that the initial set of iAds will indeed be bandwidth intensive. Will depend on use -- do you watch all of the videos in the Nissan ad, or just one? Etc. - but could be several mb per ad.
