How do I reverse my movies?

There are many English-speaking movies set in non-English-speaking countries.  Does the reverse happen?

  • I've really struggled to word this question clearly, so if anyone can improve it, please go ahead! I'm looking for non-English-speaking movies set in English-speaking countries. Take, for example, Enemy At The Gates, or Dr Zhivago.  Films set in Russia, with Russian characters and Russian culture, all acted in English by English-speaking actors.  There are endless other examples. To get to the point, does this happen in reverse at all?  Is there, say, a German version of Sherlock Holmes, filmed in London and with all the same characters, but with all the roles played by German actors?  Or is there an American gangster movie completely acted by French-speaking actors?  Any examples?

  • Answer:

Italy has a rich tradition of western movies, known as Spaghetti western (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghetti_western) Even though at least part of the cast was often American, most of the actors (and all of the extras) were Italian playing the role of American cowboys.

Germany had in the 60's a bunch of movies set in London dealing around the stories of Edgar Wallace such as The Hound of The Baskervilles. Brother by Takeshi Kitano: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0222851/

It does happen, though not nearly as often.  I give you an obscure example :http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116791/referenceMade in 1996, filmed in NYC, entirely in the German language.  I am sure there are others, but off the top of my head I cannot think of any.  Bonus link!  You can watch it on youtube :

Almost every mainstream Bollywood film made lately is filmed outside of India, usually somewhere in the West, such as the UK, Canada or US. Previously Switzerland had been a big locale for Bollywood films. A lot of the filming lately is also done in a lot of Asian locales such as the Far East, I'm guessing due to stricter visa regulations and economic (dis)incentives.

Movies from countries with a significant migrant population. A few Filipino movies are set and shot abroad.

Oh yes. The one and only Pascale Ferran made an impressive version of LADY CHATTERLEY in 2006, based partly on an earlier version of DH Lawrence’s novel. It was wonderful, it had a terrific lead in Marina Hands and others and won awards galore, along with brilliant location shooting here in Blighty – and it was all in French!
