How could I get started on graphic design from absolute scratch, assuming I've no background in drawing/sketching as such?

I go crazy when i see designs/artwork such as on this site http://www.cgsociety.org/ and would like to at least get started on it as a hobby. Gradually I would like to then move on to making 3D models for games and stuff. How do I start? Also, is it actually necessary to have a background in 2D stuff in order to advance to 3D modelling ?

Well.... The most important thing you need to start out as a graphic designer is 1."Imagination"** 2. Operating Tools The 1st pointer "Imagination" is all upto you and no one can teach you. Just like a teacher can teach to sing but not compose. The 2nd pointer is very important and can be easily learned. Many applications such as Photoshop, coral draw can be learned online. There is a very simple answer. For a graphic designer, Photoshop is a canvas, Mouse is your brush and Imagination is your Imagination. Cheers
