What is ethics like in Australian media?

How does one get the media to acknowledge a blatant and dire violation of journalistic ethics?

  • For example, why won't any journalists accept this job offer to investigate HOW a semi-fictional essay (by a young, unknown, and now— vanished!) "writer" came to appear in the New York Times as non-fictional feature? The official job offer: Freelance writer wanted for light investigative narrative piece to be included in upcoming humorous non-fiction memoir. Must be sharp, witty, tenacious, and quick-minded. Journalism background a plus. Compensation: $1,000.00 http://www.pxthis.com/PXthisToo/conspiracy/ http://www.pxthis.com/PXthisToo/2010/11/freelance-writer-wanted/ ("long-form") The suppression: "Attention Slacktory Writers: Any of you who take this job will be summarily fired, and your health insurance will be retroactively revoked. I have orders straight from NICK DENTON, for whom I still obviously work." - Nick Douglas, Gawker writer/ Slacktory founder and editor The summary: Did Choire Sicha, former editor of Gawker, collude with former New York Times food critic Frank Bruni to misappropriate the subject matter in my book, for their own glorification and/or personal gain? The jaw-dropping admission of widespread collusion within the media (by journalist Dan Tynan): "This kind of thing happens all the time in media… Taking on this assignment means alienating a lot of big name publishers… Bad Career Move." The entire story ("long-form"): http://abbe-diaz.com/books/PX_Me/volume03.html The entire story (shorter form): The entire story (the TL;DR version): WHAT DOES A PERSON HAVE TO DO TO GET THE MEDIA TO ACKNOWLEDGE A BLATANT AND DIRE VIOLATION OF JOURNALISTIC ETHICS? (EXACTLY HOW FAR DOES GAWKER'S MEDIA "CABAL" EXTEND?) Please note: OnTheMedia, Mediaite, Romenesko, Poynter, Columbia Journalism Review, etc., have all been queried. None have been forthcoming.

  • Answer:

Hmm.. You want the media to acknowledge this, and so far it seems like it won't of its own volition. Media is destined for use by people like you and me. Perhaps if you could get a significant number of people to rally behind you and pressure those involved, that could help? I mean like a petition, repeated phone calls, Gawker and New York Times subscribers demanding accountability - or else they leave with their dollars. Hope this helps.
