What are some career options for a computer science major who is interested more in the marketing and social aspects of a company than the engineering?
-
I am a 20-year old Asian girl who is majoring in computer science. However, I'm not a big fan of software development, and I tried to get a position as a product manager, but it seems like I'm not a good fit for it either, I got rejected from the Google and Microsoft product management/program management positions. I can program in C++ and Java, and I will graduate from one of the top computer science programs in the country. But I am more interested in the marketing and social aspects of a company. What are some other positions that might be a good fit for me?

Answer:
being rejected from Google and MS does not mean the end of the world and that you stop pursuing that career path !! there are other companies out there :) from my modest experience, program manager program is suitable for those who have technical knowledge, customer and user empathy amongst other trends; so being a program manager needs some technical skills so since you do not feel it; it might not be the best for you. What i think of now is social media marketing stuff; it is very trendy and can be very interesting to you, from managing social campaigns into analyzing trends, user profiles and similarity graphs.

Within Marketing/Social Media, I'd try out a position that deals with Analytics and Growth. This is a very valuable skillset and your CS background would help you be successful in the analytical environment. This is of course only applicable if you are still interested in doing something math related. If you want to leave that altogether and go on the creative side, then you can start from scratch as a marketing or social media analyst, but there is limited growth opportunities, in my opinion.

After I graduated in CS I started out working as a developer for a technology consulting firm for about 4 years. I learnt a lot of soft skills (group presentations, client management, running workshops, estimation, bid preparation, partner and vendor management, behavioural interviewing to name but a few) in addition to a decent software development trade-craft. More importantly I worked with a lot of incredibly talented people, some of whom I still work with, 3 companies and ten years later.

Just curious, why did you mention "20 year old Asian girl"? Would the choices on offer be different if you were a "20 year old African girl"? That aside, what is it about the social aspects and/or marketing that interest you? If you are good with data, and are fairly good with condensing boring data sets into crisp pieces of information, data analytics would be a good path to pursue. It's not just about fancy charts, it's about helping businesses target the right clients, being more profitable, and perhaps discourage (lose) bad (unprofitable) customers.
