How or why does baking soda absorb odors?

Would you cook with the baking soda you use to absorb odors in your fridge or bathroom?

  • Answer:

No, because it has absorbed odors which can be transfered to your foods. In fact, baking soda absorbs odors as soon as the box is opened, and I would not use it if it has been opened for over a month because over that time it has absorbed many odors just sitting there in your cabinet.

No way! it would be unhygenic to use it after its been in the bathroom. Even in the fridge, it will it have absorbed unsavory flavors and odors, Furthermore, baking soda has chemical properties that will be affected. It has a shelf life too.

If you mean baking soda from the same packet, sure.  If you mean the used baking soda, no.  My baking soda lives in a sealed container, where do other people keep it?  Baking soda is inclined to absorb moisture if left open.
