  Do you live in America? If so, under Federal law it's legal for you to make any kind of firework on your own property, and set it off the same day also on your own property. It's illegal to remove it from your property, store it overnight except in a magazine that meets published ATF standards, or transfer it to another person. It's legal to own all the necessary chemicals. However, your local (city, county, state) laws may override your rights under Federal law, and in fact frequently do. Firecrackers are a special case with special rules, because they are so damn dangerous. People who are only familiar with what they can buy in the store these  days have no conception of how dangerous firecrackers can be. Legal consumer firecrackers are limited to 50 milligrams - one twentieth of a gram - of flash powder. The legendary M80 used to contain three and a half grams - seventy times as much - and was quite capable of taking off a finger or two; 3.5 grams is still only one eighth of an ounce. The real danger is when you mix the powder before it goes in the tubes. A few ounces of flash ignited in a bowl by friction or a static spark is quite capable of dismembering you and blowing the roof off your house.
