How can I, being a student enrolled in an open university, without a guide, publish a research paper in Computer Science?

  • Hi everyone, I am a student of computer application . I am enrolled into an open university in India .I found that internet is an awesome resource for unprivileged students like me .Here I get the fabulous resources of MITOCW . they have encouraged me to boost my interest in computer science more and more .I want to do some research in computer science .My interest areas are Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning though I am open to any other interesting areas of computer science .but the problem is I don't have any resources in this regard .I have no idea that what are the famous publication destinations where I should send my papers .whether they are free or I need to pay some fees. how to start/perform any research .So I request if anyone could suggest me how to go further in this arena .I am requesting all students of famous Ivy leagues (as In India all IITs and NITs , BITS etc ....and In USA Harvard , MIT , Stanford ,Berkeley , etc ) that kindly guide me that where and how to publish papers . which journals/places can make my paper more appealing and prestigious .I have just no idea in this regard and I need every info from head to toe .Thank you all .

Hi. It is great that you have an amazing internet connection. Lot of people are denied that luxury. I am not sure if I'll be able to give you information from "head to toe", but here you go. These are a couple of points you should think about. 1) ML and AI are very broad aspects of CS. What is it that you exactly want to work on. Optimizing on a very small aspect of an already existing paper is also substantial research. 2) "Famous publication destinations"- include IEEE, ACM, Springer, AIAA etc. Try sending it to ML or AI conferences hosted by these organizations. You can search for conferences at http://www.wikicfp.com/cfp/ 3) Once your paper gets selected, a minimum of one author has to present it at the conference for it to be published. This includes an one-time per head registration fee paid in favor of the conference. Plus transportation and accommodation cost, obviously. 4) You can start you research by referring to 50 other papers, which have been written in the same field as yours. This will hopefully give you an idea. I am sorry that I was never part of any Ivy Leagues or IITs or NITs. This is very shameful for me, and hence am staying anonymous. I am from a 2 tier Indian engineering college pursing my 2nd year B Tech. I hope you find my answer credible. PS: I have 5 international papers.

Other answers

What occurs to me is to ask "do you have meaningful research to publish?" I would work more on the research end and get that part done first, rather than the publishing aspects. Then when you have something worthy, it will be a shorter journey to figuring out how to publish it. Or you can do that in grad school. If you are just starting, see if there is a research methods course to take. Become aware of the current work in the areas you are interested in. You might do searches to see what kind of work undergraduates are doing. http://www.csurj.org/index.php/csurj/
