How does a foreign software engineer look for software jobs in Japan?
-
In the USA, there are job fairs for USA jobs, and networking websites such as LinkedIn and Jive to expose yourself to hiring, but is there a "job fair" or similar for getting software jobs in Japan, or is it all about knowing someone?

I'm a soon-to-be Master's graduate looking for work in Japan. Yes, there are job fairs, actually, and they can be quite effective - but only if you happen to hit them. I found out about one of the bigger ones - the Boston one in November - a week after it happened. http://www.careerforum.net/event/?lang=E Job search sites can be a pretty good idea, though you won't get far unless you're willing to work for less or your Japanese is very good. Daijob is pretty typical of these. http://daijob.com Many large tech firms (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, IBM, etc.) have Japanese offices. They don't usually focus on hiring internationals, but you can give it a shot. Some large Japanese companies are enthusiastically hiring internationals; Rakuten is a good example of this, though if you're a new graduate they do the traditional Japanese hiring process, which is very slow. The best thing I've done so far is to contact my school's alumni association in Japan with a basic description of my experience and interests. This got me in touch with people at companies with positions suited to me who were willing to introduce me to people at other companies they knew if they couldn't help me directly. Anyway, hope that helps, and good luck.

Do not underestimate the power networking/connections.Do you know anyone working in Japan? Would they vouch for you and would you like to work in their company?Iâve brought several engineers from overseas. It is an expensive (money and time-wise) process and risky process. Companies have to: handle the visa process (most often requires hiring a professional lawyer to handle the procedure, requires to wait about 2~3 months) help relocate help with basic things such as (but not limited to) finding a house, getting a phone, opening a bank account it may hard or next to impossible to do that on your own depending on your visaâs length and financial resources take the usual risk involve in hiring someone Meanwhile, the person may not even like Japan or just like it as a touristic destination. Working in Japan is not the same as having a nice holiday in Japan. Soon the new immigrant is home sick, tired of the local customs and want to go back home. The company would have invested a pretty penny to bring that person to Japan but would have been left with nothing.Compare that to hiring someone that is already in Japan and that knows for sure that he/she can handle living in the country for several years. For all those reasons, having someone vouch for you can go a long way to having a company take these risks for you.
