What are career options available in geology?

I graduated with a BSc in geology but I don't feel like doing it as a career. What are my options?

  • Answer:

Oil&gas.  This may be difficult, depending on your politics and environmental philosophy, but will take care of those student loans in no time.

I am getting a feeling that you're from India. If so, this answer might prove useful. Firstly, there are some things that you can do for which no degree is necessary. I will not discuss those options. I will discus things you can do to build up on your Graduate degree in Geology. MBA - This is the most obvious choice. All you need for doing an MBA is a graduate degree, which you have, in fact, you can use your graduate degree to enter the drilling/mining/mineral exploration industries. You can any other field too, if you want. Law- There are some good law colleges in India that accept people who have graduate degrees for their LLB programmes. IN fact, the best law colleges in India a few decades used to accept only graduates for their LLB course. Nowadays, some of the best law colleges in India accept students for LLB right after the 12th. You  can use your knowledge of geology or some other science to become an environmental or patent lawyer. Of course, you can become any other kind of lawyer too. DIsaster management - You can get a pst graduate degree in disaster management. Your knowledge of geology will help a little. The course is conducted by some of the best institutes in India, like TISS in Mumbai.

Well, first understand that you are far from the only person who has achieved their BA or BS, and decided that they don't actually want to do the type of work which that degree (whatever it was in) supposedly prepared them for.I have found that the study of a subject may be interesting, even absorbing, but the job that subject leads to is not the sort of work that the student actually in interested in doing. I suppose it is because the studies prepare a person with information about a subject, but rarely actually introduce the student to the consequent job or jobs that study serve as a foundation. It is worth taking some of the tests available that give you information about what sort of WORK you actually are fit for: whether in an office or traveling, whether working with people, or alone, whether as part of a small team or part of a large corporation, or perhaps as a lone individual.I earned my bachelor's and master's in geology, and spent three years in a doctoral program in geology, and in all that time (over 9 years) I believe I had only ONE class which in any introduced me to the sort of activities that actually became my work for the following 35 years.I happen to like it fine, but it isn't for everyone. Like all jobs, there are parts I like very well, parts I tolerate, and some parts I don't care for. I think that's the case with most jobs though. However, over those 35 working years, I have seen many people get out of college with a BS in Geology, who get a job in geology, but find, after a few years, that it isn't really what they want to be doing, or isn't available in a place where they want to live.No harm done, really. A BS in anything at all is fine as a 'base education' for all sorts of jobs. Many don't really require a degree in that field, just the fact that you have completed four years of advanced study (in anything) is sufficient - or perhaps you might want to seek a short certificate course, in some topics, in order to qualify.Or you could go to graduate school, and study - anything you like.

You could definitely do masters in the other subjects you took up during the three years like maths physics..etc. Or try banking exams or administrative exams. Or maybe if someone manages to works in any government mines for 3(or 5 i am not so sure) the person could be a certified mine planner! Or even study a bit more harder and achieve the gatepass to study abroad! Or be a teacher Numerous options available :) Best of luck!
