Is it possible to start college fresh after dropping out?

I want to drop out of my college (IIT B) and start my startup business. I am very confident about my startup, but confused of dropping out will be a good idea or not! What advice can you offer?

  • Answer:

A good business man always analyze risk-reward ratio before venturing into anything. You should ask yourself following questions before making any decision - Have you made any prototype of the product that you are offering? Have you contacted anyone for working for your startup? (You should ask your friends just to see if they believe in your idea.) Do you know your users? (Often it seems simple but its the most complicated thing) What about funding, how much do you need and how will you arrange it? etc. Ideas have no value. Everyone get plenty of them throughout a day. Its execution what makes successful entrepreneurs different from others. You are in IITB. Make use of it's facilities. Your college must have incubation/startup club. Make use of it. Interaction with other people with similar interests will help you a lot. You can even ask a professor to be a part of your team. That will help you in getting funding.  And you can always sit for placements if it doesn't work out. So right now its more rewarding to stay in IITB. ps - If you really want to test your idea, ask your friends to drop out with you. See their reactions. It might be a reality check for you.

College is a very good time to start up. You have all the essential tools. You dont need to care about salaries, office space and food. These things wont be able to you if you leave college. Get hold of few friends, you have your team ready. I think dropping out are cool stories but reality check is a good to have. So make your startup your focus. However, dont ignore your studies completely. I think it is doable. I know couple of people who are doing.

If is it possible to go back to college again if you fail then drop out. I see you are full of energy. So it would be a bad choice delaying. It may be safer if you try starting it from college itself and if things go good then may be you can drop out. (Like most of the famous entrepreneurs). Don't just take a idea and run out of college.

Don't drop-out... According to me you should complete your degree from IIT B and then follow your start-up dream... Even if it fails then you can get a job being in Tier-1 college like IIT B... But if you drop-out now risk is more than later... I know you are from IIT and you will take risks to achieve something like Mark Zuckerberg but it doesn't click always... Take my advice do your degree from IIT and then take risk.. If your startup gets successful let me know. ;) Best of Luck.

One of the things that an entrepreneur needs to have or ends up developing is a strong internal compass. And asking for opinions or gathering consensus on a Quora thread isn't the way to go. It doesn't matter what anyone says you should or shouldn't do. I'm not going to talk about how good/validated your idea is, because honestly that doesn't matter either. What matters is that you have an intense desire to make people's lives better through what you do best, building products/solutions and not stopping till you get it right, which is never. There's no such thing as a finished product. Statistically speaking if this is your first idea, you will not get it right. You're not meant to or equipped to. Knowing what is a "good idea" and what to do with it is an acquired skill, which you need to develop faculties for. But if that doesn't stop you from trying or keep trying, then give it a go. Max Levchin, co founder of paypal tried 7 startups before doing paypal. Rovio developed 52 games over many years before Angry Birds. A great way to look at this decision is from a journeyman's point of view. Read 'Startup of you' by Reid Hoffman for more dope. If it's your life ambition to make a difference to people lives through your products and the countless failures and ambiguities along the way only fuel that desire, then absolutely quit and startup! And dont let anyone convince you otherwise. fwiw I'm an entrepreneur, who's wrestled with this question for a long time. Having worked in 2 startups, helped a bunch of them, and having tried 2 failed products going on my 3rd, I'd highly recommend the startup of you approach. With each attempt you get better at being an entrepreneur. My analogy of this would be, the person who's stayed in pitch darkness for the longest time has developed a lot more faculties to survive and excel in those conditions than a person just thrown into darkness (a big portion of starting up is not knowing what to do). If you're the kinds who'll stick in the darkness, you know my suggestion :) Good luck!

You are giving contradictory statement confident about my startup Vs but confused of dropping out will be a good idea or not Actually you are not Confident. Please follow a Placement shell & fuck yourself with high paying Job(IIT badge is must) Business & Employee are like 2 different mentality

Don't drop out. Finish your degree. Otherwise, I guarantee that you will regret it in the future. You have 40 years of working life ahead of you, in order to start a business!

Do not drop out. Your degree will save you at all times but your startup may not. I am not demotivating you but it is good to complete your degree. I have some friends who continue doing their degree even after starting a company. It can even help you to take strategic breaks in your career/life when required.

I think you already know the answer deep down. How much time is your startup work taking from your acads?? Have you created an environment for yourself where you cannot leave as is and come back later (both studies n startup)?? My take: IIT B, IIM or any college really dont matter as long as you are EDUCATING and ACQUIRING yourself of the knowldge and risks needed to move forward. Remember, there are no guarantees whatsoever and I mean to deter you by saying it. Now, think about the progress you made with your startup, is it something which really makes you think about balancing it with something as valuable as college degree?... spend time creating a prototype, do all that is necessary suggested by our quorran friends to ensure you take it forward. Dnt believe in the hype 'drop-outs' in startups carry, each ones driving force and motivation maybe very different from the other, find yours, go seek and then you will know what to do ? ;) Cheers !!

Small birds stay in nests until they have their wings grown up... I have not started anything yet but I have read others...  Take your project side by side and do some bootstrapping.. Let some revenue flow. When you will get to know your expenses and revenue you are generating, then take a decision.
