Should "Big Data" be capitalised?

Which is a better career option nowadays, database administration or a career in big data?

• Let me make you clear regarding my background. I am a student of B.Tech. Computer Engineering from India a little inclined towards Database Administration. But, nowadays there are a lot of things happening in Big Data and job roles are changing Dramatically. There are a lot of news and articles regarding surprising hype of Big Data/Hadoop, companies changing their strategies a wide shortage of Big Data professionals. On the contrary, there are articles telling that there is so less need of Big Data Analytic as more the data gets complicated more it is difficult to analyse, Big Data Systems not ready for enterprises, Big data is just a hype. So, will big data make any impact on conventional RDMSs? Is it advisable to go for DBA path or one should opt for a carrer in Big Data?

• Answer:

  ATA - If by Big Data you mean something specific like Hadoop, then I would focus on Hadoop. I think there is probably as much demand for Hadoop experience as general DBA experience but less supply. The two are not unrelated though. With both, general sysadmin experience helps. In both cases you can use SQL.
