How do NFL players memorize their team's playbook?

  I'm no NFL player, but recently had to help my 10yr old son with this, so researched it.  He plays both ways and had over 35 plays to memorize. I know NFL playbooks have hundreds, even if they only run 50 or so in a game. One thing that's clear to me, even at the Jr level and over the past 3 years, is that even if the play has a different name, the kids begin to understand the basic play structures very quickly. I can only imagine that after playing football for 10-15 years, these guys have had thousands of downs' worth of practice, so must be able to adapt fairly quickly to nuanced change in a basic formation or play. <<<Completely Unrelated to the question:  My Son's team just made the Nationals after going 8-1 for the season and winning their last game with a play called "Red-34-Power." Red = Right, there were 2 designated runners  on the play #34 and #44, this play reversed the numbers to confuse the defense (call 34, hand off to 44), Power was a sweep play with the Tight End and WR blocking. These are 10 yr olds. I'm confused!!>>>
