The "Gunks" (aka Shawangunks) are 1.5 hours north of NYC and they have world class climbing. All trad (no sport climbing), high quality climbs at easy grades. Most climbs 1-3 pitches. Camping available at the Multi-Use area on Rt.299 - the American Alpine Club is building a new campground nearby as well, probably opening in 2014. There are 2 commercial campgrounds in the area, expensive and usually booked.
