What kind of jobs are there for a computer science major?

What kind of jobs require a computer science degree that are CS heavy and light on coding?

  • I have a computer science degree, but I prefer more theoretical stuff. Something that requires a strong CS background but only coding small projects/scripts. Does this kind of thing exist?

  • Answer:

If you enjoy computer science you should become a computer scientist.  Go for your PhD. In some research areas, you don't have to code at all, and you'll spend your time thinking and reading papers.

Get into research. Before all the researchers beat me with a bat, I am not saying that researchers are bad at coding in any way- most of them are amazing. Its just core computer science research is much more than what programmers hammer out through their keyboard after lot of coffee. You only need to answer the question that are you good in mathematics and do you have an aptitude for research. For example:- Operating System design is about analyzing systems. Theory of computer science, finite automata, discrete mathematics, etc- great research is being done in these topics right now. And most of them dont require you to be an expert coder. You just need great mathematical ability, thirst for knowledge and a research aptitude

Have you considered physics, astronomy and similar? Many of these science disciplines make very heavy demands on maths and computer science skills.
