What happen to Geo City?

How can we geo-target Facebook Page updates to still reach our desired audience when the city that we are looking for is not an option?

  • For example, small towns are hit-or-miss: Some cannot be geo-tagged when making a Facebook status/photo/video/etc update, others can. So how do we find the nearest town that can be geo-tagged to reach the audience we are looking for? For an even more specific example, the city of Toronto (in Ontario, Canada) can be geo-tagged. Strangely enough, a neighbourhood (smaller than North York, which is not listed to be geo-tagged) within Toronto's downtown core, Forest Hill, is included in the list of cities that can be geo-tagged.   As a result, I have been searching high and low for any reference document or map to show how these territories are marked out. Trial and error by consulting Google Maps and testing nearby towns to see if Facebook recognizes it is exhausting.  This would be good to know to ensure our messaging is reaching the right audience. I have already confirmed that Facebook users are geo-tagged according to their IP address.

UPDATE: Facebook introduced ad-targeting to specific zipcodes in the U.S. http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/08/16/zip-code-ad-targeting-click-through-rates/ Hopefully this will expand to its other native features such as geo-targeting posts on Facebook Pages.
