Can I get a decent job with a 3rd degree?

Did you manage to get a tech job or make a successful career after dropping out because of bad performance in exams?

  • Especially Indians. I'm about to get a year back after my 3rd year. So I have 2 options : 1.waste a year and then complete my degree 2. Dropout and dedicate one year to self learning new technologies. I've already dropped a year before college. I like programming and already know a lot which is more than people who are comfortably passing exams and will have a job by this year's end. Plus I enjoy doing MOOCS more. I'm totally frustrated of college and exams. Interested in web development and security.

  • Answer:

Understand that once you drop out, you generally can't go back to college to complete your degree months/ years later. So this is a one way path. You have already completed 3 years, so a couple more of the grind will help you to qualify for several options in employment. Your ambitions and life plans may change later, and getting opportunities gets harder for someone who employers label as a 'quitter' ( even if it may be unfair). So think and take a rational decision. One more thing, if you do decide to stick it out in engineering, please do not do it half heatedly. If you can program and follow mooc, you are capable of independent study and are probably not having intellectual challenges with your course, so put in your best and get good grades.

Given that you want to pursue your career in IT field , graduation degree doesn't matter a bit . I am a Btech in CS and in any interview I have not been asked about my Qualification , just being asked about the programming language I know.  You can get a job solely with your programming skills, though you will find a little bit frustrating in the starting. Do try in start ups and as you are saying you love programming, that can help you land in good job. Also try your hand at freelancing on sites like odesk and elance. Graduation is helpful only if you are in some good college and just they give you a chance to sit in placements. Hope it helps
