What is the best possible way to compose classical/orchestral music on a DAW (especially on Ableton Live)?
-
Classical/Orchestral music is my favorite genre and I really want to compose classical music.I have this great one shot orchestral sample pack from 'Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra' and several VST plugins such as Garriton Personal Orchestra and World Instruments etc.So basically I am asking is that how do I neatly arrange and sequence these instruments and which instruments should I use? And well you can listen some of my reworks/tribute from some of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies which I recorded and arranged on Ableton via my old midi keyboard here on- https://soundcloud.com/aviatofficial/sets/classical-orchestral-music

Answer:
Although I have no specific experience with composing classical music with Ableton Live, there is always a fairly procedural method for producing any kind of music on Abeton Live. Once you get started with a new project, you can organise your different VSTs on different MIDI tracks and record/plug notes into the same. This can involve instrument layering by means of using the same MIDI composition on different tracks. Additional percussion to your composition can be added by means of Drum Racks, Impulse, etc. on MIDI tracks. A selection of Audio tracks could be used to add previously recorded audio samples to your composition. The convenient switch between Session and Arrangement views in Ableton will assist you in organising your ideas more effectively. Once you are pretty much satisfied with your arrangement and selection of VST instruments/effects or samples, you can move forward with the equalisation and mixing process which has its own set of technical details and can be achieved by using EQ3, EQ8 and Filters. The final touch would be to master your track, and Ableton provides a lot of presets for achieving that in form of various audio racks. The selection of instruments really depends on the composer and its hard to provide a good set of selections for classical music. Better organisation by means of grouping and colouring related tracks can help improve your workflow. Another important tip to improve the speed of your workflow would be to prepare a basic default rack for your every composition and saving your favourite preset settings from time to time.
