Should I become a Scentsy consultant?

How does a software developer become an independent consultant?

  • I'm a software developer/freelancer. How does one become a "consultant" and how does it differ from what I'm currently doing (code-for-hire)? What steps can I take to become a consultant and acquire my clients as a consultant and not a freelancer?

  • Answer:

I think the difference between freelancer and consultant is largely in taking ownership of one's work. Simply put, if freelancer is "code-to-hire", consultant is "end-to-end solution to pay for, with support". To elaborate: Are you comfortable putting your projects on LinkedIn and gathering recommendations from the people for whom you have completed a project a year ago? Are you comfortable taking part or all of your compensation in equity, not in cash? Have you been offered yet? Have you asked? If the project/company would be growing and they would consider bringing you onboard, would they be offering you a "Software Engineer" role or the "Chief Architect" role? If you are not available full-time or part-time, would they still want to have you as a mentor or advisor? If the answers are "yes" and the projects have been large enough, just call yourself a consultant from this day on. :-) If the answers are not yet "yes", but you would like them to be, you know what questions to ask yourself and your prospective partners!
