What is blackberry messenger?

What is the protocol for BlackBerry Messenger?

  • What are the underlying protocols underneath BBM? I can't seem to find any documentation. It seems like it might be based on Blackberry PIN messaging, but I can't find any docs on that, either. Anybody have anything on this?

  • Answer:

It is a proprietary RIM protocol (in fact, several protocols at the application and transport layer) that uses the device PIN for addressing.  Routing and queuing of messages is handled in RIM's infrastructure, the BlackBerry Relay.

Yes, it is RIM own protocol at transport layer. However, the current BBM5 uses a different variant, since the BBM server is able to support all sorts of neat features e.g. BBM contacts remote (server) backup/restore, avatar supports, message multicast etc. But essentially it is ALWAYS a peer-to-peer pin messaging client. That's why so many ppl feel addicted. So you won't get any doc for this protocol...and I don't see any need to know this protocol either :)
