If someone enjoys learning languages; currently speaks English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian fluently; and plans to learn more, what career path would be most suitable?
-
This person wants to work specifically with the languages.

Answer:
You will never succeed in any area except for linguistics if knowing languages is your only skill. You can be a translator/interpreter or a linguist , but that's it. To be something more than that you need real skills and knowldege in other areas. You will not get hired to an international organization just by knowing a foreign language. They already have specialists that not only speak several languages but also have deep knowldege of international law, history of diplomatic relations, diplomatic protocol and etiquette and many other important areas. You can't even be a translator/interpreter for an NGO because for that one needs a degree in international relations or international law. You won't get hired for a huge corporation just because you speak a foreign language, except for a one time event where they will need a translator. How many succesfull CEOs and high ranking corporate officials actually speak a foreign language? To work in tourism and hospitality you also need many skills beyond speaking a couple extra languages. Your only option is to be an interpreter/translator or a linguist.

It's not a question of the best career path, I think. It's a question of what do you want to do. Do you see yourself in the arts, engineering, finance etc.? In short, you need to do what you really want to do. No matter which path you choose, you will find language skills useful. You will achieve a lot more than people with zero language abilities. The only thing I would also consider is that your future job involves communication with foreign colleagues, perhaps even going to a foreign country might be a good idea.

Languages are just "clip-ons" to your main "weapon system," so to speak. They help and enhance your work and worth in your main career domain. Decide on what you actually want to do first, and then use your love /knowledge of languages to enhance that main line. Languages on their own won't take you too far other than in translation work or linguistics. This is basically what and are saying. Unless of course translation or linguistics really is what you want to do for a living. We all have to operate on some realistic level (as Richard Burton's character put it in The Night of the Iguana, the 1964 movie)

Learning a new language is always beneficial by many points of views. For example: If you are a native English speaker and you learn Chinese, Hindi, Urdu and so on, You will be able to get various job opportunities available in countries like India, China, Pakistan. When you have fluency in Hindi, You can become a Hindi teacher in leading Indian colleges and schools. You can also work as a translator in various Indian Embassies spread all over the world. The knowledge of Chinese language can open up your chances to get good and high paying jobs in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other neighboring countries where Chinese language is spoken at a large scale
