My wife and I are considering a river cruise in Europe next year. Viking Cruises seem pretty nice. Are there other cruises that are noteworthy?

And any caveats about a vacation like this?

Answer:
I heard only good things from a Canadian about the tour they did. He is in his 80's and the only negative was that sometimes he felt "a little rushed". Take what you like from that.

There are many decent river cruise lines out there including Viking, Uniworld, Ama Waterways and Tauck. One of the newest is Emerald Waterways who are aiming at a slightly younger demographic and price wise will be a little lower than those mentioned above. Below is the cinema which has a sliding roof and is actually a swimming pool during the day! The ships are in the 4 star range and have many innovative features. Take a look at a post about last years launch from our blog here http://about2crui.se/EmeraldWaterways

APT also do river cruises. They are an Australian company so I would expect them to have majority Australian guests. http://www.aptouring.com/travel-styles/River-Cruising/Europe My uncle traveled with Viking (He is a young at heart 60's), he didn't really like the other guests on the cruise. He said their were a lot of retired Lawyers, Doctors and mid level civil servants. He has a low bullshit tolerence and found them a bit pretentious. There were also a lot of elderly people on the boat. It didn't make for a lively holiday. APT's clients not likely to be any livelier. Now of course that is his personal preferences and it may be that you have lovely people on your boat. He didn't have any complaints about the cruise company itself. It just wasn't for him. Note He has taken sea cruises and enjoyed them.

I have heard good things about @http://www.avaloncruises.co.uk/ - they have loads of European river cruises, so it just depends where in Europe you want to go! They also have themed river cruises so you can go on a culinary cruise if you're a foodie, or a wine tasting cruise.... With regards to caveats, the excursions are included but don't feel like you have to do any/all of them - you're able to explore destinations on your own if you like, so don't feel pressured

There are several river cruising options other than Viking. You might want to check out AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and Tauck.
