How can I start a graphic design portfolio?

I want to start a new career doing web design.  Do I need to get another degree, or can I get hired with just a snappy portfolio?

  • Will I be as good a candidate for a web design position if I learn the components of web design through sites like http://lynda.com rather than paying $50K to get a degree through The Art Institute?

  • Answer:

I hire web designers and that question depends on several factors. Are you interested in becoming a designer/developer or just a designer? What programming languages do you know? If you're not going to break code on your designs, than you'd just be considered a graphic designer. Snappy is subjective too. I'd look at some help wanted ads for web designers to see if you fit the qualifications. If not, consider taking a few classes. The designers that work at my company can create a custom design in Photoshop take those files to development, content management integration, multi browser testing, seo enhancements and cross platform mobile compatability. They all went to school to learn how to do this and had a kick ass portfolio. Good luck!
