Do people in the Bay Area use the term "the Bay" instead of "the Bay Area"?
-
I hear this a lot in SoCal and sometimes in NYC, but am not sure if the natives call it that too.

Answer:
I refer to it as "the Bay" not as a rule, but for brevity. I rarely refer to "the Bay Area" at all. When talking to people from the area, I usually need to refer to a specific place: North Bay, the City, South Bay, East Bay, Peninsula. When I talk to people outside the area, I try to eliminate confusion and I say either "Silicon Valley" (or "the Valley" if they are tech people), "San Jose" or the "Bay Area of San Francisco." I'm by no means a native, and as I mentioned, I rarely need to talk about the entire Bay Area as a whole to people.

Well, now that I know that haters from the east coast are saying, I will drop a line to 40 to make sure he comes up with a better name. I say it all the time for, as mentioned, brevity. But, when speaking to other people from California, it is probably the only way I reference it. Unless, of course, I am trying hard to curb my slang. It is generally accepted, at least in Nor*Cal, 'the Bay' means any of 9 counties. Some times, depending on who I am speaking to, I will say Wine Country, or more vaguely, San Francisco-ish. I never hear people call the City 'frisco' or 'San Fran'. That is painting a huge tourist target on your chest.

Certainly no one ever does in my nerdy circles, but I suppose most of us are not natives. The only example that comes to mind is Oakland native MC Hammer proclaiming in his classic "U Can't Touch This" that he has "toured around the world from London to the Bay".

Former Bay Area resident Tupak Shakur used the term "the Bay" in his masterpiece California Love. Everyone else I know, however, prefers "the Bay Area."
