When will electric cars become available?

If self driving cars become available in 2020 and common place by 2030, how will that affect urban and suburban development?

  • This is a follow-up question to .

  • Answer:

One of the effects will be that the cars can drive away to a remote parking lot after taking you to your destination, which will free up a lot of space that is currently being used for parking lots, parking structures, and street parking spaces.

Besides urban and suburban, it will have a huge impact in rural development. These cars will open up millions of job opportunities. Also, the standard of living will improve in India.

This will reduce by a factor of 20. Most cars service 1 person and are stationary 23 hours a day and require real estate at every point they make a stop. If most cars are operating 24 hours and servicing 20x people the impact on parking spaces and hence land use and urban/suburban design will be profound. Mall parking now takes up 50% of the space.

For most people taking a cab will be so much cheaper and more convienent than owning a car that most people will abandon car ownership.

Robocars may provide a new level of mobility for kids, old folks and people with handicaps who are currently depending on others to get around. I'd like to see that happen before I get old.

I think it would tend to encourage sprawl as it would reduce the time cost associated with living far from urban areas, since you would be able to be more productive during your commute.

Self driving cars will completely change the way we design cities, much as the Segway has. People think self-driving cars will be some sort of magic bullet for the problems associated with traffic. They won't be. Infrastructure improvements are being made as fast as they can be to accommodate privately owned non-self driving cars, but usage expands at faster rate than does capacity. There is no reason to believe that this won't hold true for self driving cars. The problems that self-driving cars solve that mass transit cannot are "last mile" problems that can be solved or partially solved by less expensive and resource hogging means. Moving large masses of people from Point A to Point B (for example, from Anaheim to Downtown Los Angeles) are better handled by mass transit. From Downtown to your office is a last mile problem. Shuttle buses with 15 minute intervals or pedal powered individual transportation are better last mile solutions than self-driving cars. The whole concept of self-driving cars is a "have your cake and eat it, too" solution to an increasingly crowded and resource constrained world that neither meaningfully addresses crowding nor resource consumption. Rather than spending public money on creating an infrastructure for self-driving cars, I'd rather see it being spent on improving mass transit.  Self-driving cars are a solution for self-important douchebags, much like Google glass and Segways. It's the latest flavor of snake oil for the rest of us.

Self driven cars cannot survive in India :) Now most of the people can afford a car. so by 2030 imagine the traffic. If that Self driven car comes, now itself it can't survive in India. its obstacle avoiding sensors will make car to stay where it is for the whole day :)

With prototypes like GM's EN-V;     Streets will have zones where these networked vehicles can travel and free up congestion.  Sidewalks will have to lead up to doorways to drop residents off.  Charging stations will be available like gas stations to recharge these units.  Wifi networks will need to be setup throughout the city.  All these urban developments and more will need to be implemented into the infrastructure before personal vehicles like these can become common place.
