Why doesn't Facebook allow developers to query all fans of a Page via the API?

  • Right now it is not possible to get a list of all fans of a Facebook Page. There is a feature request for that but it's been there for some time already and nothing has happened. Also, Facebook removed the ability to browse through all fans of a Page, so there is no "semi-manual" way to get a complete list of fans.

    We used to be able to scrape the last 5,000 fans of a page until a few months ago. Of course, scraping is not technically permitted. Doug Camplejohn, CEO of Fliptop, said that Facebook gave him the ability to pull all fans of a page (userid, gender, what they like)-- but the pricing to get this data for a few of our pages is several hundred thousand dollars a year. In response to what the Facebook engineer has said earlier, there are several good use cases for having the list of Facebook fans of a page.  Coke has the main Coke page, Diet Coke page, Sprite, and so forth. They want to know the number of unique fans they have-- currently not possible. Same is true for some brands that have many fans on a single page. For example, we know that there are at least 91 countries with fans on Red Bull.  However, Facebook insights limits you to only 45 countries, leaving some important countries with zero data, such as Japan and Argentina. If we had fan-level data here, we could provide these requested reports. Facebook knows about this, as we've asked over the last few years. But it seems that only a few big brands care for this level of data.

Most likely to prevent abuse. That said, I recall writing something a few months back that pulled all of the people who Liked a page. It's not currently available via the API, but I believe I did it through FQL.

It's just not feasible technically since a page could have millions of fans. Lady Gaga, as of today, has 36+ million fans. There's no way that getting all of those fans is useful in a way that we'd approve of even if it was technically feasible
