What is the best free online marketing tool for small businesses?

  • Social media and SEO are all a huge burden for many non technical small businesses owners, meaning they have hire experts.  Groupon and Living Social are proving in many cases to be bad for small businesses.  What options out there are really helping small local businesses?

  • Answer:

Check out the 30Day Challenge (google for it or YouTube it) it is an excellent hand-held 30-day video tutorial to help you get started and take you step by step over the Internet Marketing aspect. For SEO in particular, check out the video by this software maker called Market Samurai (http://www.marketsamurai.com/) - you can also see the founders of Market Samurai give video lectures on YouTube and on 30-Day Challenge, they will REALLY help you in clearing the misconceptions of what SEO is and explain the intricacies of SEO to a novice, that actually works.

There are a lot of free tools out there that are really helpful. Plus there are some paid for tools that offer a free version or at least a free trial if you need to do a one-time job. I put together a pretty big list of free and paid for tools http://sixdegreesdigitalmedia.com/tools/. You can definitely get keyword research done free from several tools so unless you need really deep data, you’re ok with free tools. If you have a WordPress site, there are plugins that will promote your blogs to social media profiles for you. If you need help with content, Post Planner isn’t free but it’s reasonably priced to help you with content. Unfortunately SEO and social media strategies either require time or money to really get results.

Social Media really can be best and the learning curve isn't as steep as it was.  You just need to Google and You Tube the heck out of both and learn.  Also putting some elbow grease into article and video marketing and press releases would help.  If your customer base is local, don't forget Google Places. BTW, it's all SEO, this stuff is just "off page"

Nothing is "free", but the closest to it is content marketing if you're willing to spend the time. Blogging about topical issues your customers care about, then emailing your list directly ($) is one of the most effective ways to not only establish yourself as a thought leader, but endear yourself to them. This assumes you publish on a regular schedule (once a week, two weeks, month?) — AND write about things they care about. What knowledge can you leverage about your business to help your customers? Approach it that way.
