What is Model United Nations?

What is your personal experience with YMCA's Model United Nations or any Model United Nations conference for that matter?

• How many years did you do it for? What committees were you in? What countries did you represent? What friends did you make? What sort of things did you accomplish?

• Answer:

  Well, I've been MUNning for 3 years now. I started in 8th grade, in DISEC as Gemany in my school's MUN. To put it simply, I sucked in it. But I still enjoyed every single moment of it. Watching everyone else debate, lobby and draft documents was an amazing experience. So I kept on MUNning, and went for 5 more. My committees and countries were: 1. NATO, Norway 2. DISEC, Egypt 3. WHO, India 4. SC, USA 5. DISEC, USA The experiences just kept on getting better, because I kept on participating more and more in committee, and I kept on learning more tips and strategies to use. And I got better as a delegate too. Finally, for my 7th MUN, I was able to chair a committee (UNCSTD), and that too was great fun and a whole new experience. However, the great experience and 4 awards I won wasn't all fun and games; there was a lot of hard work and research prior to the conference. But it was all worth it. I made many new friends as well. All my allies from the conference and I keep in touch, so you build a great network too. So, in my opinion, all the hard work really pays off; it's worth it. Even if you don't win, you get great personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement - maybe you got over stage fright spoke in public for the first time. All in all, MUNs are one of the best experiences you can have in your life.
