What is the difference between a team member and a sales associate?

What is the difference between the Sales Operations (and Strategy) team and the Business Operations team at a tech firm like Google, Facebook, or Twitter?

  • I've noticed these teams typically require 2+ years consulting/banking experience and very rarely take undergrads/Master level students. Is it risky to start your career in such a team out of undergrad/Masters? How does your career progress? What are the exit opps? Can you swap between these 2 teams? Can you move into corporate strategy or a similar team at the tech firm? Is 'Online Sales & Operations' at Google the same as the 'sales operations' or 'sales strategy and operations' team?

  • Answer:

Without a better definition of either group, I'd be inclined to say that  Sales Operations & Strategy would be client facing, whereas business operations would be an internally facing function partnering with Sales Operations & Strategy. One would focus on the company's face to the customer, whereas the other group would be focused around the internal operations as it relates to product development, perhaps some aspects of marketing & revenue along with the day to day work that would parter with sales support and GoToMarket teams within the sales operations groups.

It probably could be a great opportunity, given that they usually don't take students after their graduation/masters. I guess you could move into corporate strategy later..
