What's the best way to use a 4:3 projector on a 16:9 screen?

This would be driven off Macs. Is there software that will play 4:3 video in the middle of the 16:9 area? Is there software that will allow me to smoothly show the screen (e.g. browser) on a 16:9 screen?

Answer:
Since this is projection, in a real theater one would simply cover the sides so that you don't see the blank screen. (On a 16:9 TV, you have black/gray/or white bars.) All scaling will be done by your video card.
