How to fix an inner door handle?

How do I fix this door handle that fell off?

  • My door knob is falling off. I think it is missing a micro screw on the side to hold it in place. There is threading to connect the handle to the lock set but it doesn't stay in place. Anyone have an answer on how to definitively fix?

  • Answer:

Step 1 add a picture to your question so we can see what type of handle it is. It may require tightening a set screw, or engaging a catch or some other thing. Show the knob and the part it attaches to. Step 2 find a set screw that fits that hole in the handle and tighten it down firmly.

the inside threading of the handle looks stripped. if you cannot find a micro screw to test your idea, maybe some kind of putty or caulk like Bondo could be used to secure it on there and allow you to turn it, at least for a while. if that does not work, replacing the handle may be the only way to get it back to 100%. honestly, if it were me, I would duct tape the fuuuuuu out of it. =D

If u r unable to find a screw to fit in the hole then you may have to get it replaced in case the threading is also stripped.

That small hole in the side of the handle is the key to the answer.  IF it is threaded, then you will need to go to a hardware store and find a set screw that fits it along with an allen wrench that fits it ( a small wrench made of an l-shaped or t-shaped piece of hexagonal hardened steel stock).  IF it is not threaded, you will instead need a tapered roll pin of the correct length and diameter to drive through the hole.  Another clue is that roll pin connections typically extend completely through the knob, so there would be a matching small hole opposite the one shown in the photo.  There do not appear to be threads on the shaft that extends through the door, most modern ones have threads on one side only if at all.

Yep...as others here have said, all you need is that little "set-screw" to lock the handle to the shaft. Most hardware stores and home centers have an assortment of set-screws, so taking your handle to them should be the simplest and quickest way to find what's needed. If the hole threads are stripped, you might need to do a bit more to fix this. If so, you'll have to drill the hole a bit larger, then "tap" the hole with threads to accept the next size set-screw. Best to you.Just sayin'...

If you’re unable to find the screw, you would need to replace the lock. If you’re located in NYC, http://www.soslocksmith.com/ can install http://www.soslocksmith.com/residential/lock-installation/ professionally for you.

Find the manufacturer and send them this request or go to the retailer that sold you this. It looks like it is indeed missing that screw and in all likelihood will require the manufacturer to send you one. Good luck!
