Is it safe to drink the water in Hong Kong?

How safe is it to drink tap water in Hong Kong?

  • Answer:

Healthwise it's supposed to be safe.  However because the water goes through some old pipes, the water often doesn't look that good, so people will put a filter in it. Among the people I know, very few local people will drink tap water without boiling it.  It's not necessary, but people just feel uncomfortable doing it.  This matters when you have guests.

Depends very much on where you live as pipe conditions vary. It might be your building or the Water Supply Dept.Generally you rarely drink tap water without any treatment, e.g. boiling or running through a filter. The water can get really nasty, as exposed by the lead-in-water scandal. (That’s the construction firm’s screw up) it doesn't taste good either.I personally tasted water straight from the tap and the taste isn't really that delighting. (The metallic/chlorine odour really puts me off) it sometimes also gives a weird sensation to your mouth. (A rough sensation on your tongue)My advice: boil your water all times or install a direct-drink filtration system (not that expensive) and forget about it.
